Jin-muk

562–1633. A venerable Korean Buddhist monk renowned for his enlightenment and scholarship. His original name was Il-ok (일옥 一玉), and he was born in Bulgeochon Village in Jeollabuk-do Province. At age seven, he joined a Buddhist monastery at Bongseosa Temple. A book written by Monk Cho-ui in the late Joseon dynasty tells of eighteen miracles performed by Jin-muk. Sangjenim revealed that after the monk’s tragic death, his spirit traveled to the West, taking with him preeminent spirits of Eastern teachings.
