The 1894 armed uprising of Korea’s late Joseon era intended to remove corrupt government officials and end social inequality. This revolutionary movement was suppressed largely due to foreign intervention. Since the government was not successfully overthrown, this event is often termed the Eastern Learning Rebellion or Eastern Learning Uprising. Jeung San Do, however, calls the event the Eastern Learning Revolution since it was an impetus for transforming the balance of power in East Asia and eventually across the world. This revolution became a catalyst for the First Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War, which influenced global power shifts in the early twentieth-century.
