Cheonjigongsa

Also known as the “Work of Renewing Heaven and Earth.”

It was a spiritual work based on cosmic principles and conducted with the spirits, begun by Jeung-san Sangjenim (1901–1909) and continued by Taemo Go Subunim (1926–1935), in the form of rituals, proclamations, writings, and conversations with humans and spirits.

To relieve the bitterness and grief of spirits, Sangjenim united them in a federation called the Government of Creative Change, which served Sangjenim in ordaining the historical tides that shall precede the Later Heaven Gaebyeok and usher forth the Later Heaven’s Paradise of Immortality. Sangjenim also united the terrestrial qi of the various regions to bring forth a world of unification.

The two principal currents of Cheonjigongsa were the ‘destiny of the world’ and the ‘destiny of the dao.’ Cheonjigongsa, in essence, was designed to resolve the bitterness and grief of humans and spirits and reconstruct the order of heaven and earth, for the purpose of renewing heaven, earth, and humanity, hence bringing to pass the Later Heaven’s Paradise of Immortality.

▍Introduction

The Ruling God of the universe, Sangjenim, incarnated into this world to fundamentally heal the diseased world and weave together programs for the new world and civilization. This is Cheonji Gongsa (천지공사 天地公事), “the work of saving by reconstructing heaven and earth, the work of gaebyeok.” Cheonji Gongsa translates as “the work done with heaven and earth” signifying “the work determined by heaven and earth.”

This work entails the disassemble and reconstruction of heaven and earth; in it, Sangjenim, together with heaven and earth, determined the future of humanity. Thus, Cheonji Gongsa is about human affairs. Human affairs become history, and history evolves according to dosu (도수度數) meaning “programs.”

In the Government of Creation-Transformation, the government of spirits, Sangjenim passed judgment on Early Heaven’s history and laid the framework of a new future, which has been alterializing in history ever since He began His work of renewal.

After uniting the world of spirits and forming the Government of Creation-Transformation, Sangjenim, aided by this government, conducted His nine-year work of renewing heaven and earth (1901~1909). This work of renewal enabled the wills of the universe and of the way of spirits to come together and be fulfilled in human history.

“In disassembling and reconstructing heaven and earth, I have firmly fixed the programs without allowing a single drop of water to escape. When the proper time is reached, a new framework will be established” (Dojeon 5:320:1~2).

Sahng-jeh-nim’s work of renewal manifested in history in two areas: world affairs and Dao affairs; the work of world affairs determines the destiny of world history is called Seun(세운 世運) ; the work of Dao affairs establishes the path by which the successors of Sangjenim ’s Dao will complete His work is called Doun (도운 道運).

▍Concept

Cheonji Gongsa was designed to resolve the bitterness and grief of human and spirits and redirect the order of heaven and earth, for the purpose of renewing Heaven, earth, and humanity, hence bringing to pass the later Heaven’s Paradise of Immortality.

Cheonji Gongsa will eventually allow humanity to pass safely through the coming time of gaebyeok(“renewal” or “a new beginning”) and subsequently build the Paradise of Immortality.

Cheonji Gongsa was conducted in the form of rituals, proclamations, and conversations with humans and spirits. Cheonji Gongsa was an extensive and intricate series of actions—rites, reorganizations, proclamations— that Sangjenim performed by commanding the spirits, and its purpose was no less than the curing of the malaise afflicting all of heaven and earth. To relieve the bitterness and grief of spirits, Sangjenim united them in a federation called the Johwa Jongbu (조화정부 造化政府) “Creative Government”, which took part in planning how events leading up to gaebyeok would unfold and what sort of world there would be in the Later Heaven.

Also top make the world conduct to uniting humanity, Sangjenim performed rituals to harmonize the terrestrial energies of the various regions. A labor never before attempted by any other Dao figure, Cheonji Gongsa was possible only with the boundless power and authority of God the Ruler.

Over the course of the nine-year span of His Cheonji Gongsa, Sangjenim’s work of renewal took Him not only across Korea, but also throughout the world and even to heaven and deep beneath the sea, and He gathered disciples and followers to serve Him in this work.

While Cheonji Gongsa’s main goals were simple in prospect and yet infinitely grand in scope, the form that Cheonji Gongsa took was conversely an extraordinarily complex array of often meager – appearing acts. These acts took the form of rituals, proclamations, writings, and conversations with humans and spirits, and involved an extensive array of dosu. During His labor of Cheonji Gongsa, Sangjenim wove together dosu very carefully, in order to influence the events of the future.

These results of His work of renewal manifest in two realms:  the Seun (세운 世運) ‘the destiny of the world’ and the Doun (도운 道運) ‘the destiny of the Dao.’ Sangjenim’s labor regarding the destiny of the world determines the path of secular world history, while His work regarding the ‘destiny of the Dao’ established the path by which the successors of Sangjenim’s Dao will one day complete His work.
